A World Of Choices – Dog House Designs

Filed Under (Dogs) by Guest Author on 20-08-2010

There are a limitless amount of dog house designs available to dog owners. Hundreds of online blogs, design companies, and contractors have websites geared toward getting your dog in to their (or your) dream dog home. Most people will likely want to go for a simple and traditional dog house designs; while others may wish to follow modern celebrity trends and provide your pooch with an over-the-top designer dog house like a “Hacienda” or “Colonial” dog house design.

Indoor Dog Homes

People who live in condominiums or townhouses with little or no yard space also have options available. There are many top-notch, classy dog house designs that fit right in with the decor in your home. These can range from coffee and end tables that double as a quiet getaway for your dog, so custom built sofas or cupboards that allow your dog a place of their own to claim some privacy.

Outdoor Design Choices

You may not want to go with a basic traditional, or full-blown fancy designs: Perhaps a farmhouse, or barn-style doghouse would better compliment your property and buildings. Custom made, or ready-made solutions are available for a very affordable price, due to the competition among pet accessory manufacturers these days.

Most dog house designs come fully insulated with a variety of eye-catching elements like: mock chimneys, windows, self-retracting doors, etc. If you plan to make your own: Make sure you get a set of plans in front of you and/or have someone with building experience on hand for help. Just because a dog house isn’t as big as a house doesn’t mean the chance of making errors is smaller — A dog house is a house on a smaller scale, without plumbing or electricity (though some people include both in their dog house designs).

The best thing about modern design choices is that the choice will likely be the hardest part — there are so many design elements, materials and accessories that it’s best to set some time aside to make your choice.

Potty Training Puppies – Simple Techniques

Filed Under (Dogs) by Guest Author on 13-02-2010

We all know that you do not actually use a potty when you are potty training puppies. Once you understand that you dog will not make use of a potty or a toilet, you can learn about how and where to train them to do their business.

One thing you have to understand is that there are many different breeds and types of dogs. Understanding that some dogs learn how to potty train quicker than other dogs will make the whole process run smoother. This is why it is recommended that you do your research before you go out to buy a pup. Make sure that you are able to handle a certain breed of dog, and that you have the patience to train the dog.

Before you get going with the training of your dog, you want to make take note of a very important factor. It is that you should never get upset with your dog in the training process. Dogs are somewhat like children, if you get upset with them, they will think that they are doing something wrong. This will make the process a bit more difficult.

The First Step – You want to make sure that the dog is on a good schedule. So make up a good daily routine that you will follow. This includes your routine, the time you wake up, the time you go to be bed, the time you eat and so forth. The last thing you want is your doggy getting too confused. If you keep a good routine, the dog will soon catch on and will start running to your routine. Most of the time a dog will get so used to your routine, that you will not even need an alarm clock any more. You will however wake up with a wet face!

Secondly – Accidents happen, so it is better if you keep your dog in a place where he cannot do too much damage to carpets or rugs. The best place for a dog in the training process is always in a tiled room.

Step three – Decide whether you want your puppy to do its business inside or outside. Many people opt for outside, as that just seems like a natural thing to do. However, if you feel that you do not want your puppy getting too cold, a specified place inside a bathroom is a good start. Also, you want to make sure that whenever the puppy does its business, it is in that one area only. You will have to be with it initially to make sure this happens.

Lastly – The dog will be a bit uncomfortable at first, but it will happen. He will need some time to get used to the spot, and get used to your standing there with him as he does his business. This is a good training method, because he will then be comfortable doing his business in a park. Just make sure you take a poop-scoop with you.

Always Remember – If the dog does nothing for the first few times of taking him or her to the “toilet spot”, do not play with him. You want to make it known that going to the toilet is important. So, if it does not happen, take him back inside and confine him to his sleeping area.

Boston Terriers – The Ultimate No Mess Or Fuss Pet

Filed Under (Dogs) by Guest Author on 03-05-2009

Where do Boston Terriers come from?- The first Boston terrier called Hooper’s Judge, was a cross between an English Bulldog and White English Terrier, bred in the United States of America in the 1860′s. The dogs where originally bred for pit fighting purposes.

Features and appearance – Boston Terriers also known as Boston Bull Terriers are small breed dogs. They are rather stocky with broad chests and arched necks. The terriers have short, rather small, fat faces with boxy noses and very pointy ears. They have dark, bright eyes, prominently positioned. Pelt colors range from mixtures of black and white, brown and white or brindle and white. They are very easy to groom with no shaving and minimum brushing required. These little dogs are clean-cut with no mess or fuss.

Measurements- The doggy stands tall at 38 -43 cm. Weighing in at 5-11 Kilograms. Boston’s are well proportioned and according to International standards should not weigh less that 5 Kilograms or more than 12.5 Kilograms to be categorized as under or over weight. However the dog’s frame must be considered when weight is determined.

Character traits – Of all the terrier breeds Boston Terriers are the friendliest and most loving. However just as human personalities and temperaments differ so do animals’. Get use to neurotic behavior such as constant yapping and hyperactivity is you plan to make a Boston part of your family. On the up-side these dogs are easy to train due to the voice tone sensitivity, enthusiasm and high intelligence. The trainer or owner will just need a bit of patience, endurance and estimated 6 months for training. Strict or harsh training methods will fail terribly as the dog will feel pressured and intimidated. Once trained Boston’s are great house dogs.

General health problems- The dogs are unfortunately very inbred and poor breeding practices among dishonest breeders is the order of the day leading especially to mental retardation, a common condition associated with terriers. Other chronic health problems include breathing difficulties and other related conditions such as snoring, grunting and drooling. Due to the prominent position of the eyes, eye injuries also occur more frequently. Cesarean procedures are popular as natural births are too painful due to the large head-size of the pups and narrow shape of the pelvis.

Healthy pet- Balance is key to keeping your doggy happy and health. Work out a balanced exercise and dietary program to eliminate over-activity and illness. Long walks, running and playing is a must to the fitness regime. Severe gases and obesity can be cause be fatty and high fiber diets.

Living conditions- Boston’s are not fussy about living conditions especially not the size of their home or playground. In small areas all that’s required is a street or park for regular walks of at least twice a day.

Age Expectancy- The dog’s age expectancy is dependent upon his or her diet and level of activity. Your little yank companion can reach age 15 years and older.

Dog Training Tips Which You Can Use

Filed Under (Dogs) by Guest Author on 09-04-2009

Do you feel like your dog is the “boss” and you are just there for the sake of being there? I am certain that you are not the only one. Inside your home, it is your dog’s sofa, chair, bed (located in your bedroom), not your own, and if you attempt to get this area back, you may receive a snarl for this.

Are you upset by your dog continuing to disobey what you tell him to do? If this sounds like something that you are familiar with, you are on the right road now – there is a method to use to change your dog into a submissive dog with the correct training advice.

The difficulty of this task will be determined by the breed of your dog. Some dogs, having been breed for hunting or guarding, are very difficult to train. This having been said, however, any dog is trainable and they will, with patience, obey your commands. A dog will only defy your commands if he is allowed to do so.

In a dogs world dominance is the name of the game. They are pack animals and their main goal is to show who is the leader or “Alpha” dog of the pack. That being said if your dog lies on the sofa when he knows he isn’t allowed then he is showing his dominance over you.

If you don’t take this “alpha” position, then your dog will take over this position. Even when you make an attempt to teach your dog it is necessary that you show confidence and body language that definitely lets your dog know that you are the boss, or your dog won’t think of you this way.

Remember, even when you become impatient that firm isn’t aggressive and angry. All you need is some simple yet consistent dog training tips to make the bond between your dog and yourself much more enjoyable for not only you but the dog too. Even though some of the tips might not be in your nature you have to let the dog know that you are his boss. The first thing is too control your tone of voice when giving a command.

As pack leader, your voice should be firm, non-emotional, and authoritatively. This conveys to your dog that you are in charge and serious and your pet will have more focus on his training tasks. Use a more affectionate and soft tone when playing, so your dog learns the difference between play and training time. Secondly, in order to establish yourself as the dominant, you must perform every action before your dog is allowed to do so.

Coming in the house, going out of the house, or strolling in the middle of two parked cars should always be done by you first and your dog has to walk in back of you all the time. Mealtime should be an activity that you can use to show you are in charge – you are the first one to eat, and after this you dog eats. You should begin playing with your dog first as well as do anything else first. This won’t be easy in the beginning but it will assist you to have a more enjoyable time with your dog in the future.
